How to practice self love even when you don't know where to start
falseI had a realization last night as I was staring at the overwhelming mound of dirty dishes in my kitchen. I'd been avoiding getting around to them for.....a while. It's just been too much for me to handle, and I've been busy, and a million other excuses.
But I realized that if I really loved myself, I would do the dishes. If I had a partner who was feeling how I felt and was about to start a long work week like I was, I would do the dishes for them. We all deserve clean dishes to eat off of and space to cook food.
Sometimes self love isn't affirmations (although they can help). Sometimes it's looking at the floor and saying, wow, I don't remember the last time I vacuumed. If I loved myself, I would do that.
As someone who is working towards unconditional self love, having the mindset of it being daily actions instead of expecting myself to reach nirvana RIGHT NOW seems much more reasonable. Because even if I don't feel the self love right now, I can practice doing something that would show myself love and make life a little better for future me. And leaving dishes for that long.....that's neglecting myself. I've been neglected enough in my life. I deserve better.
And that starts with me. Doing the dishes at midnight before I go to bed. Even if I'm grumbling the entire time and hating every second. Because now this morning, I got to eat cereal out of a clean bowl with a spoon instead of just shoving a handful in my mouth on the way out the door.
