2. To the one longing for home : stressLess-life
To the one longing for home
I know the beginning was a scary place. Full of hurt, anger, and despair. None of it your own, but nevertheless, passed down to you like a rite of passage. Not one that leads to growth, fills with pride, instills courage. Rather, a rite of passage that stunts progress, rips you open exposing shame, suffocates with fear.
I want you to know you didn't deserve it. You didn't deserve to be taken away from the only home you ever felt safe in. You didn't deserve the weight placed on your shoulders, the responsibility to carry their hopes and dreams. Because it wasn't just hopes and dreams you carried for them. They filled you with their own insecurities, self-hatred, distrust and fears. You didn't deserve their cruel words, being witness to abuse. You didn't deserve walking on eggshells, existing in doubt, holding your breath, pretending things were okay when they weren't. You didn't deserve the isolation you were forced to live. You never deserved a broken home. So what if their lives were worse? What if they lived through hell? You deserved better. You deserved more.
You do deserve more.
I see you now. I see how much you've longed for kindness, for love, for safety. For a home that only in dreams you were able to rest in. A place where you truly belonged. I see how much love you have inside you. An endless source of warmth you've always wanted to share with everyone around you, especially those who, like you, experienced coldness growing up instead of true unconditional love. And those people, at some point became home. Rooms decorated with beautiful memories belonging to you and those who welcomed you into their world. Those same rooms simultaneously built inside your heart. Each one, a room rebuilt from the ruble that was your childhood, until your heart became full.
And you were finally happy.
But now you walk an almost empty home. Borded up windows, locked rooms. Dust collecting on surfaces as white as the ghosts left behind those doors. You had so much love for everyone, my dear, everyone else but you. I don't say this to shame you. You're not wrong for loving as deeply as you did. For loving as much and as freely as you did. That is your biggest gift to this world. You simply forgot to love yourself too.
No...
That's not entirely true.
You didn't forget. You were just never taught to love yourself. You were never taught you mattered too. That's why you abandoned yourself every time someone came along promising a forever. But that's not your shame to bear. That's their biggest failure, not your's. You are their greatest loss. That much is true.
So let go of the shame, let go of the regrets, because you were there for people when they needed you most, and that's something to be proud of. But now it's time to show up for yourself. I will do my best to show us both that you deserve so much more. So as you walk these echoing halls, try to find the light. I'll be there beside you when you discover home was always within us.
