I’m learning that improvement is mostly about breaking old habits, not adding new ones
falseI used to think self-improvement was all about stacking new habits on top of my life. Wake up early, meditate, journal, read, gym, do meal prep, and learning a new skill. Be productive. Be disciplined. Be everything all at once.
And every time I tried to add all these new routines, I’d burn out in like four days. Then I’d feel guilty and start over, repeating the same cycle. I thought something was wrong with me because everyone online makes it look so easy.
But recently I’ve been realizing the real problem wasn’t the lack of new habits, it was the old ones I never questioned. I had patterns that were pulling me backward while I was trying to push forward: impulsive spending when stressed, avoiding uncomfortable tasks, procrastinating until it became panic, pretending problems weren’t problems, and constantly telling myself “I’ll fix it tomorrow.”
Once I started focusing on removing those instead of adding more stuff on top, things actually started to change. Even small things helped. Stopping myself from buying random things I didn’t need. Cleaning my room before it got overwhelming. Sitting with discomfort for a minute instead of running from it.
One of the biggest shifts was fixing my money habits. I grew up thinking credit cards were dangerous, so I avoided credit completely. But that led to bigger issues later, I literally had no credit history. So this year I finally decided to do it differently. I started using a debit card that reports to the credit bureaus, so I could build credit without feeling like I was stepping into another bad habit. Just that one change made me feel like I was finally breaking a cycle instead of repeating it.
Honestly, I’m starting to understand that self-improvement isn’t about transforming into some new perfect version of myself. It’s more like slowly removing everything that kept me stuck. Less addition, more subtraction. And it feels… lighter.
