My professor called me out during a debate, but I didn’t let it shake me. Here’s what happened.
falseHey Reddit, I’m a 21M uni student, and something happened recently that I wanted to share. Last Saturday, I couldn’t make it to lectures because I had some personal matters to attend to. When I showed up on Sunday, one of my classmates mentioned that the professor had assigned a debate during the previous lecture. I had no idea about it, so I was completely unprepared.
Fast forward to the debate: I joined a group that was short one person. I quickly Googled some info, wrote down some points, and when it was my turn, I started presenting. The professor stopped me mid-way and said, “We don’t want you, sit down.”
Here’s the thing: English is a second language for all of us, and everyone else in the debate was using their phones and notes too. The difference? I was reading my points quickly and fluently, while others were speaking slowly, struggling to read, or even stuttering. One guy couldn’t even read what was on his phone, and a girl was stuttering badly. But the professor didn’t stop them—he only stopped me. He didn’t even ask me to slow down or give me a chance to finish.
I didn’t feel awkward or ashamed, though. I stood firmly, maintained eye contact, and didn’t let it get to me. Afterward, some classmates told me they were sorry and that the professor can be rude sometimes. I just shrugged it off and said, “It doesn’t matter. I don’t regret anything.”
This isn’t the first time I’ve handled something like this with confidence. Once, I was shopping at a market, and my legs got tangled in some ropes, causing me to fall. People rushed to help me up, but I just got back on my feet, brushed myself off, and continued shopping like nothing happened. No shame, no embarrassment.
I’m usually a very shy person who doesn’t like to stand out, but in moments like these, it’s like my inner self takes over and protects me. I don’t know if it’s confidence or just not caring, but it’s a side of me I’m starting to appreciate.
Has anyone else experienced something like this? Where you surprise yourself by not letting things get to you, even when others try to bring you down?
