Mom always brings up my looks despite knowing how it makes me feel (possible tw: weight and body image issues) - sorry for the long post
https://ift.tt/oczey1mHi everyone! I’m writing this on one hand to get some tips and tricks on how to deal with my situation and on the other ig as a bit of a place to express my emotions.
I have been dealing with fluctuating weight my entire life, from childhood until now in my early adulthood. Growing up it didn’t cause that much issues for me confidence-wise and I could say I really liked myself until I was in my teens. Around this point my mom really started pointing out my weight and looks, saying she is only doing it cause she cares about me. The thing was, I always had a normal looking body, but ig not normal enough for her.
This led to a lot of ups and down with loving myself and being nice to myself. During Covid I decided to use my free time to focus on myself and lose some weight. Although physically that was good for me, it ruined me mentally and emotionally. I would restrict a lot of food and exercise up to 3 hours a day every day.
I thought that getting to my “goal” weight would finally make me happy but after I started university my entire mental health went downhill. I stopped caring about myself, gave all my time to studying and the weight came back. I have been doing therapy lately and have been doing bit better every day but I feel like every time I come back home I regress back so much because of my mom constantly pointing out that my body is back at the “bad stage”.
I know that I am not in the best shape of my life, but my goal right now is to get myself feeling better mentally. Looking back at the past and how miserable I still was despite looking conventionally attractive shows me that first I need to feel better about myself as a person. I have been implementing healthy eating and workout in a moderate measure but my mom still won’t let go as she is not seeing any physical progress.
My question is: how do you manage to practice self love and self growth even in situations like these?
TDLR: mom brings up looks and weight all the time, despite being told how it affects me mentally. I am working on my body currently, but need advice on how to not let this affect me so much mentally, and stop me from practicing self love
