A Guide to Rewriting Your Past and Healing Your Inner Child
https://ift.tt/w1JTA6GWhenever I reflect on my childhood, the first memory that surfaces is of my reluctance to attend kindergarten. I vividly remember crying uncontrollably as the teachers dragged me inside and urged my mother to leave. In those moments, I felt a deep sadness, insecurity, fear, and, above all, shame when the teachers pointed out that the other children were perfectly fine while I was the sole dissenter. As I've grown up, I've come to realize that my life's journey has been a lesson in overcoming that profound sense of separation anxiety and the fear of abandonment.
I left home at the age of sixteen, embarking on a journey that took me through Shanghai, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Toronto, and finally New York, which is arguably the farthest I could be from my hometown. With each relocation and transition, life taught me valuable lessons in becoming a stronger and more courageous person.
However, there is always a part of me that feels a lingering sadness, remorse, and occasional heartbreak when I think back to that timid version of myself who was so afraid of kindergarten. I questioned how I could embark on this healing journey, and I eventually realized that the best approach was to rewrite my story. Instead of nursing the wounds of feeling abandoned and hurt, I began to have conversations with my younger self. I assured her that leaving home was okay, that my parents' decision to send me to kindergarten was not an act of abandonment but a gesture to help me grow, learn, and experience the beauty the world had to offer. I reminded myself that staying at home indefinitely would have deprived me of those wonderful experiences. Kindergarten was not a perilous place; it was merely the initial step toward embracing change. Once we summon the courage to embrace change, we become receptive to all the beautiful gifts that life has to offer.
Now it's your opportunity. What is the initial memory that surfaces when you reflect on your childhood? What's the narrative you've been repeating to yourself? How can you reshape that narrative from a fresh perspective and engage in a dialogue with your younger self, allowing them to feel secure, acknowledged, and illuminated? I’d love to listen to your experiences.
