Building Self-Worth by Reframing Failure
https://ift.tt/gi4hfGZAs a life coach, I have worked with many clients who wanted to achieve different life goals, such as career fulfillment, healthy relationships, and physical fitness. They need to work hard to overcome the mental and emotional obstacles that prevent them from succeeding, such as procrastination, self-doubt, and a perfectionist mindset. One thing I find interesting is that these blocks all have one cause in common: unworthiness.
In today's article, I'd like to share one of the best exercises to build your self-worth. The purpose of this exercise is to rewrite your past stories and change the way you think about them.
Let's begin with a negative experience. Rather than seeing it as a failure, reframe your thoughts and see it as learning opportunities. Take time to reflect on this experience and write down what valuable lessons you learned from it. This is also a process of forgiveness and letting go of regrets. Your mistakes and negative experiences happened for a reason, and without them, you wouldn't have grown. Thank them for that! As you practice forgiveness, you will begin to feel better about yourself. You gain self-worth by being kind to yourself despite negative experiences. Building self-worth is not about getting validation from external sources, it is about accepting yourself with kindness and forgiveness.
The next question is - what are some of the things you did during those difficult times that helped you get back together? Identify the things that helped you the most, such as your personality traits, strategies you used, resources you had, or people you connected with. When you realize your strengths in overcoming certain challenges and honor yourself, you automatically become less fearful of failure and you also have more faith in yourself. A huge source of self-worth is trusting and believing in yourself. Your self-worth does not depend on how much success you've achieved, but rather on how you've overcome challenges, the lessons you've learned from those setbacks and the times you've gotten back together.
The last question I would like you to ask yourself is how you can acknowledge the effort you put forth despite failure. Often, people procrastinate because they are afraid of failing at something. In fact, there is no greater failure than not trying at all or not doing anything at all. Failure means you at least tried and took action at the time, and that's worth celebrating. Let go of your attachment to the outcome and honor your courage based on the efforts you made during the process. You build your self-worth by being fully present and savoring every moment of your journey. It's not the end goal that defines your self-worth, it's every step along the way.
Now that you know these powerful questions that can help you reframe your failure, please take 20 minutes tonight before you go to sleep, take your journal, rewrite your old stories by answering these questions, and jot down what it made you feel.
Wishing you relief, peace, and strength from this exercise.
